I and many other ladies I am sure have been using primers but not many know the actual reasoning behind it and the benefits to priming your face.
Think of it like this... Before you paint your nails you will need to prime it by adding a base coat. The same goes for your face before applying foundation.
The skin has various imperfections and colour variations, and a primer provides a smooth surface to apply your makeup on. It also has a benefit if keeping makeup in place which is particularly useful in hot and humid conditions. Makeup primer has the unique ability to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, using primer as a layer between your skin and foundation provides the base necessary to create the appearance of perfect skin at any age.

Primers work much like a moisturizer under your foundation does. It is applied after your moisturizer but before your foundation. They ease the application of foundation and are meant to create a barrier between foundation and skin. The barrier created means that the foundation is not making direct contact with the skin which means it is not absorbed into the pores. This in turn results in less breakouts and also less dryness. Silica, also known as silicone dioxide, is the mineral commonly found in primers to control shine.
Finding a primer that works for all occasions and skin needs is a process not unlike choosing a foundation. They can be transparent or tinted, moisturizing or drying and specially formulated for different parts of the face. It depends on the person, their skin type and also their preference. Below are a few that I use and will let you know which is my favorite.

Nars ProTime Multi Protect
I first got this primer as a tester from the counter when purchased my Tinted Moisturizer. I must say I liked it and still have it as a little goes a long way.
Mac Prep & Prime
This primer I must say is my least favourite. Why? Well it has SPF50. This is a good thing but because of that, when it is applied it leaves a very ashy/grey hue on the face. This then makes it very difficult to blend in your foundation as you feel like you have sprinkled your face with baby powder. It may just be due to my skin pigment but all in all it is very rarely used.
Revlon Beyond Natural
This product is one that I purchased out of the whim from one of those random stalls in my area. It was cheap and thought 'why not'. I am very happy that I did as this quickly became my favourite product. It has a silky feel to it and seems to just melt into the skin. My makeup is left looking fabulous with this product.
Inglot Under Makeup Base
This primer excites me. Yep you read that right. It actually gets me excited to use. It is also another one with a silky smooth texture. It melts and absorbs well into the skin leaving you with a beautiful smooth base. I first got a tester of this from a friend then did not hesitate to go and purchase it. I must admit that it is a bit on the pricey side at £13 a tube. It is a small tube which may make you reconsider but I promise you that it is well worth it. My favourite primer.
Hope you found this post useful and let me know of any other things that you would like to know about.
